POLLEN / FLOWERS / SEEDS

Male flowers produce pollen. Seeds develop in fertilized female flowers.

Both male and female cannabis plants produce flowers. Male, or staminate, flowers contain pollen-producing structures. Female, or pistillate, flowers contain ovules that can develop into seeds after successful pollination and fertilization.

For seedless flower production, preventing unintended pollen exposure matters. For breeding or seed production, pollination is deliberate. A male plant does not produce seeds simply because it is male.

FOLLOW THE BIOLOGY

Three steps, with different roles

  1. 01 / POLLENAnthers release pollen

Mature staminate flowers can release pollen into the surrounding environment.

  2. 02 / FERTILIZATIONPollen reaches a receptive flower

Compatible pollen can germinate on a stigma and lead to fertilization of an ovule.

  3. 03 / SEED DEVELOPMENTThe fertilized ovule develops

Seeds form within female flowers. Unpollinated female plants can still develop flower clusters.

LOOK AT FLOWER STRUCTURES

Female and male flower examples

The paired photograph shows protruding stigmas on the left and clusters of developing staminate flowers on the right. It illustrates flower structures, not a guaranteed age or timetable for identification.

For node anatomy, ambiguous growth and closer inspection, use Detecting Male or Female Cannabis. The preflowering guide explains where this fits in the transition to flowering. Leaf width and overall plant height are not dependable substitutes for inspecting flowers.

KEEP WATCHING AS FLOWERS DEVELOP

Flower expression can be more complicated

Cannabis can develop male and female reproductive structures on the same plant. Pollen-bearing anthers can also appear within otherwise female inflorescences. That creates a possible pollen source even when no separate male plant is present.

Inspect developing flowers regularly when unintended pollination would matter. Avoid handling or shaking suspected pollen-bearing flowers near plants you intend to keep unpollinated. An uncertain early structure deserves another careful look rather than a guess.

Seed type and flowering behavior are separate questions.

Regular and feminized seed describe different breeding outcomes; autoflowering describes flowering behavior. See choosing cannabis seeds and germination for those stages.

Plant-sex questions

Do male plants make seeds?
Staminate flowers produce pollen. Seeds develop from fertilized ovules in female flowers.
Can a female plant produce flower without a male?
Yes. Female flower development does not require pollination; successful pollination can lead to seeds.
Can a plant have both male and female structures?
Yes. Inspect actual flower structures throughout development, including for pollen-bearing anthers within female flowers.
