OPEN COMPETITIVE JOB OPPORTUNITY
Provides American sign language interpretation services to inmates housed at custody facilities within the Sheriff’s Department.
Position allocable to the class provide American sign language interpretation services to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing inmates housed at custody facilities within the Sheriff’s Department.
A variety of communication methods may be utilized, including American Sign Language, Home Sign, and other signing modalities, to meet the needs of the clients or staff receiving the sign language interpretation services. Positions allocable to this class must be fluent in English and American Sign Language. Incumbents must possess and apply the knowledge and skills required to convey the contents and spirit of the speaker. In addition, incumbents must keep all assignment-related information confidential and maintain high professional standards in compliance with the established Code of Professional Conduct set forth by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Essential Job Functions
Provides sign language interpretation services to deaf or hard-of-hearing inmates at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Provides sign language interpretation services to deaf or hard-of-hearing inmates to facilitate communication between sworn personnel during, but not limited to, medical intake screenings, inmate classifications, and disciplinary hearings.
Performs general support duties as necessary, when not interpreting on a full-time basis, as required.
Three years of experience providing interpretation and translation services in American Sign Language (ASL) to the Deaf and/or the Hard-of-Hearing.
Must possess valid Sign Language certification or license* from at least one of the following:
National Interpreter Certification (NIC);
National Association for the Deaf (NAD) level III or above;
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpretation (CI);
RID Certificate of Transliteration (CT);
RID Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI);
RID Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC) issued within the past ten years and evidence of completion of the issuing body’s Continuing Education Unit requirements;
Certificate of completion from an accredited college or university issued for an Interpreter Training Program;
A license or certificate issued by a State’s agency for Sign Language Interpretation;
A license or certificate issued by Los Angeles Unified School District or other school district for Sign Language Interpretation.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class II- Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
Candidates must attach legible photocopies of their Sign Language certification or license records with their online application at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days from the date of application filing. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire.The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
This Examination Will Consist Of Two (2) Parts
A performance test weighted 50%. This test is designed to evaluate your ability to interpret English to American Sign Language (ASL) and from ASL to English.
ONLY CANDIDATES WHO ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I WILL PROCEED TO PART II.
The performance test is not reviewable by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.
An oral interview covering knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics relevant for the Sign Language Specialist position weighted 50%.
TRANSFER OF SCORES
Applicants that have taken any identical performance test and/or oral interview with the Sheriff’s Department within the last twelve (12) months will have their performance test and/or oral interview responses automatically transferred to this examination.
This examination may be used in the future for new examinations with the Sheriff’s Department. Scores will be transferred to the new examination. Candidates may not be allowed to re-take any identical test for at least twelve (12) months.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
Invitation letters to the performance examination will be sent electronically to the email address provided on the application. It is important that candidates provide a valid email address. Please add firstname.lastname@example.org to your email address book and to the list of approved senders to prevent email notifications from being filtered as spam/junk/clutter mail.
Notice of Non-Acceptance and Final Result letters will be mailed via USPS. Test scores cannot be given over the phone.
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an “as-received” basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (Department) has a “zero tolerance” policy for its employees for the following:
use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription. use of marijuana with or without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Custody Services Division.
