Use an oven-safe shallow pan and a stable strainer over a heatproof container. Coconut oil may be spoonable or liquid depending on room temperature; it will melt in the oven.
How To Make Vegan Cannabutter
The half cup is the amount of coconut oil added, not a guaranteed strained yield. The oven method does not verify THC strength. Refrigerate the finished herb oil and use within four days, or freeze.
Ingredients
- ¼ ounce marijuana
- ½ cup coconut oil
Instructions
- Toast your marijuana; the fancy term for this process is decarboxylation. Scatter the marijuana on your pie plate; toast at 240 degrees F for 30-40 minutes, turning a few times throughout the baking. Remove from the oven, and let cool completely. Keep the oven on.
- Finely grind the cannabis; you can do this with a spice grinder, mortar and pestle, or just carefully crumbling it with your fingers. Technically you can do this before or after toasting it, but I find the drier texture post-toasting makes it easier to do it then.
- Place the marijuana back in the pie plate and either pour or spoon the coconut oil on top. Personally, my coconut oil was solid because it was a cold day, so I just spooned it on top of the marijuana. Once it goes in the oven it melts pretty rapidly.
- Place the pie plate in the still-warm oven, and let it cook for about 3 hours, opening the oven and shifting things around every half hour or so.
- After about 3 hours, remove the pan from the oven. Color is not a test of THC strength.
- Cool until safe to handle while still fluid. Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer over a heatproof container. Press with a utensil, or squeeze the cooled cloth, to recover the oil.
- Transfer to a clean covered jar. Refrigerate promptly and use within four days, or freeze. Label clearly and keep securely away from children and pets.

Keep the stages separate
Heat the cannabis at 240°F for the listed thirty to forty minutes, then cool before grinding. Add the coconut oil and return the pan to the oven for about three hours, stirring about every thirty minutes. Color alone cannot confirm strength.
Strain without burning your hands
Cool the mixture until it is safe to handle while still fluid enough to strain. Press gently with a utensil or squeeze the cooled cloth, then transfer to a clean covered container. Coconut oil firms as it cools; that texture change is normal.
Other fats and recipes
The listed vegan alternatives include olive oil, avocado oil or a vegan butter substitute. For a dairy version, see the cannabutter recipe. The Cannabombs recipe is another use described for an infused fat. Use the cannabutter potency calculator with the finished amount and known ingredient strength; the result remains an estimate.
