Cannabutter: How to make Weed Butter for Edibles

Before you go and dive into The Weed Scene's massive marijuana recipe section, you should know the basics to making the best edibles using fresh cured weed. There are a few simple steps you should follow to make edible weed butter.

Timing and yield are approximate; actual results vary with equipment, ingredient temperature and portion size.

  • Weigh and prepare the cannabis
  • Use gentle, monitored heat; see the full method below.
  • Strain safely, cool, label, and refrigerate the butter

About potency: There is no fixed cannabis weight in this recipe. Weigh and record the amount you use, and use tested potency information when available. The strength of the finished butter cannot be confirmed without laboratory testing; never estimate a dose from butter volume alone.

Equipment: A heat-safe bowl and saucepan for a gentle water bath, a fine sieve, food-safe cheesecloth, and a clean lidded container. Cheesecloth is equipment, not an edible ingredient.

Plan enough time: about 15 minutes of preparation plus approximately four hours of monitored low-heat infusion, then additional cooling and refrigeration. Four sticks equal two cups of butter before straining; actual recovered yield can be lower.

Use the separate decarboxylation guide when applicable. The potency calculator is an estimate, not a test of the finished batch. Homemade edibles may have delayed, unpredictable effects: CDC edible safety guidance. Label infused food and keep it secured away from children and pets.

Ingredients

  • 4 sticks (2 cups / about 454 g) unsalted butter
  • Cannabis flower, weighed and recorded in grams (the amount varies by batch; finished THC strength cannot be verified without testing)

Instructions

  1. Check your starting material. If using cannabis flower and seeking activated THC, complete a separately controlled decarboxylation step first; this butter-infusion step alone does not establish that activation occurred.
  2. Measure the butter and record the actual cannabis weight in grams. Break up the flower without grinding it into fine dust, which is difficult to filter.
  3. Gently melt the butter in a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water, or use another temperature-controlled, food-safe low-heat setup. Add the measured cannabis; keep the mixture below a boil and monitor it rather than leaving a stove unattended.
  4. Stir occasionally while holding a gentle low heat for approximately four hours, following your equipment guidance. Do not boil the butter or assume four hours proves any particular potency or extraction efficiency.
  5. Remove from heat. Once safe to handle, strain through food-safe cheesecloth in a fine sieve into a clean heat-safe container. Do not squeeze a hot filter by hand. Refrigerate in a sealed, clearly labeled container until firm; measure the actual recovered butter.
