Cannabutter potency calculator
Estimate cannabutter potency from cannabis weight, THC percentage, butter volume and infusion efficiency.
Estimates only. Actual potency varies with lab values, decarboxylation, infusion losses, homogenization and serving size.
Understanding the estimate
Estimated total THC (mg) = flower grams × 10 × total potential THC (%) × fraction retained after processing. Divide by the measured final butter cups, then by 16 for mg/tablespoon or by 48 for mg/teaspoon. These are US volume units.
If a report lists THCA and delta-9 THC separately, theoretical potential THC (%) is (THCA × 0.877) + delta-9 THC. The 0.877 is a molecular-mass adjustment, not decarboxylation efficiency. USDA reference.
Processing retention is a single assumption about THC remaining after heating and infusion, not a measured recovery rate. The default 70% is illustrative only. Butter lost to straining or water separation changes the final volume; always measure rather than assuming the starting amount is the yield.
Before using infused butter
Potency may be inaccurate or unevenly distributed without laboratory testing. Edible effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear, and taking more before effects develop can be dangerous. Keep infused food labeled and securely stored away from children and pets. CDC safety information.
