Why Columbus feels different.

Columbus is useful because Ohio is no longer just a “new legalization” story. The market is settling into ordinary questions: where dispensaries can locate, how home grow works under the revised code, what jobs are opening and what rules apply to renters.

Ohio’s revised home-grow section took effect March 20, 2026. Adults may grow six plants each, up to twelve at one residence, in a secure enclosed area not visible from public space. A rental agreement can prohibit home cultivation.

Use Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control resources to verify licensed operators. Columbus zoning still matters for where dispensaries can open, so availability is partly a land-use question as well as a state-license question.

Where use is legal

Purchase and consumption are separate rules.

Public consumption is not allowed. Smoking or vaping rules and property policies still apply even when possession itself is legal.

For visitors: Treat Ohio as a legal retail market, not a public-use market. Keep products secured, do not cross state lines with cannabis and use licensed dispensaries.

Home grow

What the plant limit means in real life.

The new statute is unusually specific: secure area, no public visibility, adult-only access and no cultivation where a rental agreement prohibits it. Those details matter more than the simple “6/12 plants” shorthand.

For residents: If you rent, read the lease before planning a grow. If you own, think through ventilation, security and electrical load before using the state’s plant allowance.
