Why Chicago feels different.

Chicago feels different from western legal markets because the licensed retail channel does more of the work. General adult-use home cultivation is not available, public consumption is prohibited, and a visitor has lower possession limits than an Illinois resident.

Illinois residents may possess 60 grams of flower, 10 grams of concentrate and 1,000 mg of THC in infused products; nonresidents get half those limits. Only registered qualifying medical cannabis patients may grow at home, up to five plants.

Use the state’s dispensary list and keep purchases in original, sealed packaging while driving. Illinois explicitly requires cannabis to be secured and inaccessible while a vehicle is moving.

Where use is legal

Purchase and consumption are separate rules.

Public consumption is prohibited. Illinois law allows local governments to authorize certain consumption lounges, but that is a specific local authorization—not a general right to use cannabis in bars, parks or public places.

For visitors: Use the nonresident possession limits. Keep products sealed in the vehicle and do not assume a music venue, patio or event allows cannabis simply because adult use is legal.

What the plant limit means in real life.

Adult-use home grow is not generally legal. The exception is registered medical cannabis patients, who may grow up to five plants subject to program rules.

For residents: The lack of adult-use home grow makes store quality, tax-aware comparison and licensed access more important here than in places such as Michigan or Colorado.
