Why Los Angeles feels different.
Los Angeles is not one cannabis neighborhood. Retail, cultivation, manufacturing and delivery are spread across a city where local licensing and land-use rules decide what can operate where. That makes the official retailer map unusually useful: a storefront that looks legitimate is not the same thing as a storefront that is authorized.
LA’s Department of Cannabis Regulation licenses commercial activity and maintains the city’s retailer and delivery resources. Retail storefronts and microbusinesses face a 700-foot buffer from specified sensitive uses and other retail or microbusiness premises, which helps explain why legal storefronts cluster unevenly across the city.
